The plumbing and electrical is complete. While I never dared to contemplate taking on any aspect of the plumbing myself – I’m just not that adventurous (yet) – wiring the basement was within my comfort zone and, together with a ‘cable guy’ friend, we pulled it off. I’ll always remember sweating my electrical inspection and the relief I felt as the inspector declared, “very nice work.” Whew!

With insulation and vapour barrier in place, dry walling is my next step. I’d love to hire a professional contractor for that but my budget won’t permit it and I have enough friends with their own experience, women just like me, that this job goes on the DIY list.

How I wish I had known about the BARRICADE products before building stud walls for the concrete block. What a job that was! After my pre-fab, they waited six weeks for installation and ultimately required wrestling into place due to warping. It all adds up to experience though and I did learn how to build walls.

While a check of moisture levels confirms my new basement is dry, my sump pump sounds off regularly. To protect against damage from its unexpected failure, and because I intend to cover my bare cement floor with a laminate, I’ll install the BARRICADE Modular Subfloor System. The handy online instructions, depicting the product’s ease of installation, satisfy me that this is a job I’ll be able to do myself.

For a girl who was afraid of her power tools at the outset, I’m finally getting the hang of this. Finish basement? Piece of cake!
