During a heavy downpour, the ground water can exert considerable hydrostatic pressure causing your foundation to break down and flooding to occur in your house.
Fortunately, there are basement water proofing solutions to keep your basement dry. A short-term solution is to fix the leak with an interior wall sealant. This is not a permanent fix, as water is still seeping into the foundation from the outside. Eventually, the ground water will find another weak spot for a point of entry and you have another leak to fix.
Basement water proofing is more effective when the outside of the house is treated, preventing water from entering the foundation. Initially, these treatments consisted of an asphalt-based coating. However, the coating would break down over a period of 10-20 years and would eventually need additional treatments.
